Warner Parks  2/11 - The Warner Parks Winter Star Party was held on Saturday night a the Ridgefield observing site. BSAS volunteers worked with Warner Park and the Adventure Science Center's Sudekum Planetarium to provide a great stargazing experience to 115 visitors (yes, we counted!) willing to trudge up the hill for a closer look at the heavens. Everyone had a terrific time, and occasional clouds did nothing to mar the wonder and spirit of the evening.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success, and we hope to see you all again at our next event!

Trying out a new telescope  1/17 - The January Membership Meeting was a huge success! We had nearly sixty people in attendance including a large number of visitors and several of those started the new year by becoming members of the BSAS.

Lonnie Putterbaugh gave an amazing multimedia presentation on the Messenger probe's flyby of Mercury this week, and also showed the latest cameras available to amateur astronomers. Dr. Spencer Buckner gave an entertaining and educational talk on choosing and getting started with a new telescope. The presentations were followed by lively discussions and one-on-one telescope demonstrations that continued for nearly an hour after the meeting.

Thanks to our great presenters, and to everyone who attended!

Ms. Cheap  1/17 - Tonight's BSAS Meeting garnered some much-appreciated publicity from Nashville author and columnist Mary Hance, known to Tennessean readers as "Ms. Cheap". Today's column has great information about tonight's meeting, as well as the BSAS and local astronomy in general.

Thanks, Ms. Cheap!

The Night Sky Network  1/10 - The Barnard-Seyfert Astronomical Society has been awarded the Top Ten Outreach Clubs Award by the Night Sky Network, a joint project of NASA and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Congratulations and thanks to all our volunteers and supporters who made the last year such a great success, and here's to an even better year in 2008!

A black hole against the Milky Way  1/9 - Hundreds of rogue black holes might be flying through the Milky Way destroying everything in their path, according to computer simulation results presented by Vanderbilt astronomer Kelly Holley-Bockelmann at the 211th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas.

Holley-Bockelmann's team found that the merger of two black holes can create gravity waves strong enough to impart a velocity of over .01c to the resulting black hole. Such a speed demon could reach Earth from the other edge of the galaxy in six million years, from M31 in 200 million years, or from Voyager 1's current position in 46 days!

Fortunately, they're very hard to aim.

January 2008 Eclipse  1/9 - The January Eclipse is out! This issue includes reports from the December board and membership meeting, BSAS & astronomical event calendars for January and February, announcements of upcoming events and more!
